The Movie vs. The Book

The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio fell short of my expectations. The movie itself was based on a novel that did not meet my expectations. The novel's story line is considered a classic among American modern literature. This fact is hard to accept. Plots like the Great Gatsby's are ridiculous and too hard to believe to be real. But, when critiquing the movie I distance myself from the fact. This movie's biggest success is the soundtrack. Jay-Z's lyrics, Florence's melodies, Lana Del Ray's wonderful voice, and the depth and etiquette of the Brian Ferry Orchestra are completely revolutionizing in the music industry. The cast was somewhat powerful and yet weak simultaneously. Leonardo DiCaprio completely captured the essence of Jay Gatsby. Carraway's character became the focus of the movie, but the book did a good job of balancing the attention between Gatsby and Nick. Daisy's character was not played well. Mulligan did not quite capture the essence of Daisy, but changed the character completely. The use of the pathetic fallacies came to light, but were underplayed and subtle. This movie was boring and dull, and was a mix of successes and failures. The cast and crew tried their best, but their best was not good enough.

  1. Even though I disagree with most of Aram’s opinions of the movie, he has done a wonderful job in expressing every impression he had in a descriptive way. Wow. After readying Aram’s short and to-the-point post, one can really see that he has analyzed and comprehended every aspect of the film. This is by far one of my favorite blog posts. Incredible job, Aram!

  2. Although I fairly enjoyed "The Great Gatsby", as Aram says there was excessive hype behind the novel. The soundtrack was phenomenal, including artists that our generation is familiar with, in order to capture the attention of the younger audience. I disagree that the character of Daisy was portrayed poorly. She was as described in the book; materialistic, shallow, and flighty. Despite the difference in opinion it is refreshing to see the different perspectives and thoughts on the novel and movie.

  3. Aram Harout Manoukian the Third really knows how to express his opinion thoroughly. This blog was based on opinion and solely opinion. The true strength of one's argument - and character - is how solidly they present their side and how proudly they express it. I praise Aram for sticking to his side and arguing it beautifully. Excellent work; way to stir up some controversy!
